NEWPORT — A 41-year-old Charlestown man who was behaving violently when he broke into a Newport home last year pleaded guilty and received an extended prison sentence due to already being out on bail while he was charged with a previous crime.

Adam Hooper pleaded guilty in Sullivan County Superior Court on March 25 to criminal trespassing and criminal mischief, both felonies, for breaking into a Newport home on Chestnut Street in 2024, according to court records. He had forced his way into the home by throwing himself through the stained-glass window of the front door.

Hooper, who was under court supervision and subject to a protective order for prior offenses at the time, was under the influence of bath salts and wielding a steak knife he had stolen from another nearby home at the time he invaded the Chestnut Street residence, police said.

Under the terms of the plea deal, Hooper was sentenced on the trespassing and mischief convictions to three and a half to seven years in state prison, less credit of 286 days for time served while he was held in pre-trial detention, according to court records. He was sentenced to an additional six months to three years in prison, to be served following completion of the first sentence, for committing a crime while out on bail, the records show.

Numerous other charges, including burglary and possession of a dangerous weapon, where dropped under the negotiated plea agreement.
