WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — Upper Valley residents are planning to join protests on Saturday, April 5, as part of a national movement, Hands Off!, against policy changes enacted by President Donald Trump and billionaire businessman Elon Musk.

About 1,000 protests are scheduled in locations nationwide, many of them in state capitals, including Concord and Montpelier.

In the Upper Valley, events are scheduled in White River Junction, Enfield, Hanover, New London, South Royalton, Strafford and Woodstock.

Around 500 protesters have registered to participate in the White River Junction rally. They plan to line up along Maple Street, between Hartford Avenue and Route 10 in West Lebanon, starting at 1 p.m.

The protest is organized by UV Rise Up!, a grassroots initiative recently founded by volunteers at the Main Street Museum (although the museum is not affiliated), and Upper Valley Indivisible, another justice-oriented group formed in opposition to the Trump administration.

UV Rise Up! member Joie Finley will be handing out hot pink T-shirts screen printed with the Hands Off! logo to the first 100 protesters to arrive.

Hands Off! describes itself as “a nationwide mobilization to stop the most brazen power grab in modern history.” It has more than 150 partners, ranging from LGBTQ activist group the Human Rights Campaign to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which advocates for evidence-based nutrition policies.
