Upper Valley school notes for April 7, 2025

Haoyi Liu, of Richmond Middle School, will represent New Hampshire at the National MATHCOUNTS competition in Washington, D.C., in May.
The Hanover High School Mock Trial Team will compete alongside 45 other teams in the National High School Mock Trial Championship from May 7 to 10, in Phoenix, Ariz. Team members Cole DeMatteo, Stella Hobson, Cassie Merwin, Giavanna Schembri, Cailin Stauth, Ella Tesone, Matthew Tysinger, Natalie Wainwright and Owen Welch advanced to the national tournament after besting Phillips Exeter Academy in the New Hampshire Mock Trial Association State Tournament.
Lebanon High School students Saanvi Bramhe, Audrey Cody, Kalyani Jogdand, Sarah Joudeh, Hamza Labib, John Polk, Solan O'Connor, Omar Osman, Bennett Russell, Palmer Susco and Houze Zhou competed in the NH Science & Engineering Expo (NHSEE) held at NHTI — Concord’s Community College in March. Educators John Tietjen and Matthew Custer led the group. Bramhe took first place in the physics and electronics competition for her project “The Efficacy of Safety Glasses in Preventing Wavelengths from Lasers.” Cody and Jogdand took second place in the chemistry competition for their project “Spectroscopic Determination of Curcumin in Dietary Supplements.” Joudeh came in second place in the environmental science competition with her project “Microplastics ingestion in C. Elegans.”
Nina Ellingson has been selected as the Lebanon School District’s April Student of the Month. Ellingson plays basketball at Lebanon High School, according to a news release from the district. She volunteers at food banks, the Cornish Fair and assists with youth sports. “In the classroom, Nina is consistently prepared, active and enthusiastic,” Lebanon High School Social Studies/English Teacher Sara Bennett wrote in her nomination for Ellingson. “She takes advantage of every opportunity to participate and have agency over her learning. Nina is integral to discussions and models how to make a clear argument with supporting evidence and how to appropriately and academically disagree on literary analysis.”
Sydney Gonyea, of Lebanon, made the dean’s list at Simmons University in Boston for the fall 2024 semester.
Sister Cities International has selected Elijah Collier, of Perkinsville, to be one of 88 youth ambassadors representing the United States during the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan.
Ethan Kreuzburg, of Canaan, made the Conference Academic Honor Roll for the winter 2024-25 season. Kreuzburg is pursuing a degree is sustainability studies at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., and is a member of the men's wrestling team.
Rachel Harrington, of Lebanon, who is pursuing a degree in management from Emmanuel College in Boston, was inducted into Sigma Beta Delta, an International Honor Society for Business, Management, and Administration.

Richards Elementary School, in Newport, and Newbury (Vt.) Elementary School, have received $25,000 Year of the Book grants from the The Children’s Literacy Foundation. The grants, which begin in the 2025-2026 school year, will go toward literacy curriculum, free books for children and author visits, among other activities aimed at improving literacy levels in elementary schools.
Hanover author Jodi Picoult will receive Keene State College’s Granite State Award during graduation in May. The award “demonstrates outstanding achievement in their field and contributes significantly to the welfare or success of the state,” according to a news release from college.
