UNITY — Voters easily approved a proposal to withdraw from SAU 6 with Claremont at the annual school meeting on Saturday.

The 77-17 ballot vote gave the measure 82% approval, far more than the required 60%.

As a result, Unity will officially become its own SAU on July 1, 2026.

Over the next 18 months, a transition committee will be formed and begin the process of hiring a part-time superintendent, who will then be responsible for hiring a business administrator and director of student services. The superintendent’s position is budgeted for $50,000.

Voters also approved a school budget of $4 million and money for special education and transportation reserve funds and the withdrawal of $100,000 from the tuition reserve trust fund.

During the town portion of the meeting, voters approved all the articles by voice vote, most unanimously. These included an operating budget of $1.9 million, appropriations for several reserve funds including roads and bridges, highway vehicle, fire department, building maintenance, well monitoring, vital records, transfer station and revaluation reserve funds.

The establishment of a new cemetery on Mica Mine Road also passed.
