College Notes: Upper Valley athletes race for points and playing time

Here’s a look at some of the Upper Valley residents who played varsity college sports this winter.
Plymouth State men’s basketball was 8-17. Sophomore guard Max Galbraith (Hanover) appeared in seven games and totaled 21 minutes… Kansas (23-11) reached the round of 32 in the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament with guard and graduate student Nick Timberlake (KUA) playing in every game and starting eight times. The transfer from Towson State (Md.) University averaged 5.2 points per game… Rodger Peterman (Windsor), a freshman at Vermont State University Lyndon, averaged 2.8 minutes and 0.8 points per game for the Hornets (3-22)… VSU Castleton (7-18) enjoyed the services of freshman guard Zach Thompson (Enfield/Mascoma), who played in every game and started all but one. He averaged 28.1 points and 7.0 points per contest… New Hampshire senior guard Jon Willeman (Lebanon) redshirted after surgery for an injury and retains a final season of eligibility… St. Joseph’s College of Maine was 18-10 with sophomore guard Ben Seiler (Enfield/Mascoma) getting into 15 games and averaging 5.3 minutes and 3.2 points per contest.
Drew (Mass.) University went 10-16 with sophomore forward Beth Dobrich (Sharon/Hartford) averaging 5.0 minutes, 1.0 points and 1.2 rebounds per game… Maine was 24-10 with senior guard Olivia Rockwood (Windsor) starting 17 times in her 31 games played. She averaged 6.3 points and 1.8 rebounds per outing. The Black Bears won their league-record 10th America East Conference title before losing a first-round NCAA tournament game to Ohio State… Sophomore forward Melissa Whitmore (Hanover), a transfer from Stonehill (Mass.) College, started two of the 18 games in which she played for Trinity (Conn.) College. She averaged 9.5 minutes and 2.8 points per contest… Tufts (Mass.) University was 11-8 with freshman guard Stella Galanes (Sharon/Hanover) averaging 11.3 minutes and 3.2 points… Sophomore guard Catherine Cole (Lebanon) started 10 of the 14 games she played for Connecticut College (6-17), averaging 16.4 minutes and 5.3 points… Chloe McIntire (Bradford/Oxbow), a senior forward for VSU Lyndon (11-14), started one of the 14 games in which she appeared, averaging 8.5 minutes and 1.9 points… Skidmore (N.Y.) College was 22-5. Senior forward Maddie Hastings (Grantham/Lebanon/KUA) started every game and averaged 3.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per outing.
Middlebury was 8-14-4 this winter with sophomore forward Zach Whitehead (Meridan) contributing one goal in 25 games… Senior defenseman T.J. Beaver (Hanover) produced six goals and six assists while playing 28 games for St. Michael’s (15-14)… Nathan Chickering (Grantham/Lebanon) was a sophomore forward at the University of New England (17-6-4). He had six goals and six assists during 26 games played… Cornell (22-7-6) reached the NCAA tournament regional finals with junior forward Sullivan Mack (KUA) scoring seven goals and adding 10 assists during action in 29 games… Michigan (24-14-3) reached the Frozen Four with sophomore defenseman Luca Fantilli (KUA) contributing a goal and seven assists in 37 games… Williams (Mass.) College sophomore Owen Stanheim (Lyme/Hanover) played in every game for the Ephs (9-14-1). He led the team with 17 points and 11 assists and was tied for the goals lead with six… Tufts (14-10-3) received a goal, an assist and 24 blocked shots from freshman Sylas Oberting, who played in all but one game for the Jumbos… Trinity (Conn.) College was 25-4-1 and reached the NCAA Division III title game while also hosting the event. Junior defenseman Theodore Griffin (KUA) played in every game and put up three goals and eight assists… Hamilton (N.Y.) College was 17-8-1, with freshman Lucas Constantine (KUA) contributing five assists in 19 games… Assumption (Mass.) College won the Northeast 10 Conference title for a third time, benefiting from freshman Sean Donoghue (KUA) and his three goals in 14 games.
Plymouth State was 6-20. Senior forward Marissa Pickman, a Bradford, N.H. resident who played for the combined Lebanon-Stevens-Kearsarge high school team, skated in 21 games and finished her career with a goal and an assist in 62 contests… Gretchen Dann (Hanover/KUA) had eight assists while playing 25 games for Amherst (Mass.) College, which was 21-4-2 and is 47-7-2 the last two years. The Mammoths reached this winter’s NCAA Division III tournament quarterfinals… Lake Forest (Ill.) College was 14-14 with freshman forward Ella Maher (Lebanon) playing in every outing and contributing four goals and six assists… Trinity freshman forward Kate French (Norwich/KUA) had an assist in 15 games as the Bantams went 15-7-2… New England College was 7-18 with freshman forward Samantha Babbitt (Woodstock) producing two goals and seven assists while playing every game.
Middlebury finished 10th at the NCAA championships with senior Charlie Lang (Norwich) finishing 14th in the slalom and 23rd in the giant slalom. Junior teammate Bradshaw Underhill (Newbury) was 26th and 12th in those same races… Dartmouth finished fourth at the men’s skiing NCAAs. Sophomore Jack Lange (Lyme/Hanover) earned first team All-American Nordic honors by finishing ninth in the 7K freestyle race in 19:20… Bates (Maine) College finished 11th out of 14 EISA teams at February’s Williams (Mass.) College Carnival. Senior captain Bo Underhill (Newbury) finished 18th out of 73 competitors in the giant slalom with a two-run time of 1:36… New England College sophomore Riley Burkins (Thetford/Thetford Academy) appeared in two meets for the Pilgrims but did not score in either.
Williams senior Kennedy Lange (Lyme/Hanover) finished 49th among collegians in the sprint qualifying field at February’s UVM Carnival, traversing the 1.5-kilometer course in 4:39… UNH junior Maia Garfield (Meriden) finished 32nd in the giant slalom at the Colby Carnival, clocking a two-run time of 1:51… Bowdoin senior Ingrid Miller (Hanover) was part of a fourth-place relay team in a 16-trio event that finished in 50:20 at the mid-February Williams Carnival… Bates senior Rebecca Feist (Fairlee) was 41st out of 65 Nordic skiers during the 20k race in 1:06.23 during the Middlebury Carnival in February, nine minutes behind the victor. She was 23rd out of 62 skiers in the 7.5-kilometer race in 26.17.
Norwich University sophomore Brandy Lewis (Strafford) was second in the 400-yard IM in 4:58 and won the 1,000-yard freestyle in 11:07 during the Cadets’ first-place finish at the Great Northeast Athletic Conference championships. It was the second consecutive season Norwich won both the men’s and women’s championships. Lewis was also part of her team’s second-place 400-yard and 800-yard free relay quartets (3:52, 8:27) and the winning 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43). She won the 500-yard and 1,650-yard freestyle races (5:25, 18:34) and finished second with the 400-yard medley relay team (4:23). Lewis attended Colby-Sawyer College as a freshman… Plymouth State finished seventh out of 10 teams at the Little East Conference championships. Sophomore Baillie Mako (Lebanon) and freshman Vicki Ni (Lebanon) each swam the 100-yard freestyle. Mako posted a season best of 1:10 and Ni finished in 1:27 but neither qualified for the finals… Tufts diver Nika Renshaw (Hanover) had the top two scores against Bates during a January meet. The junior scored 227.85 in one-meter and then scored 237.84 off the three-meter board…. Bates senior Grace Wenger (Hanover) won the NESCAC title in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:49 as the Bobcats finished fourth at the 11-team meet. She was sixth at the NCAA Division III championship in 1:51 while her team finished 18th out of 40 schools… Skidmore junior Sophia May (Hartland/Hanover) swept the diving events at back-to-back meets. She scored a 241.65 in the 1-meter competition followed by a 193.73 in the 3-meter event… Junior breaststroker Issy Hiller (Woodstock) finished fourth for Williams in 1:08 at the four-team Middlebury Invitational in February.

Georgetown (D.C.) University freshman Birhanu Harriman (Lebanon) competed in the 2024 USATF Cross Country championship in Richmond, Va., in January, and his 8K time of 24:24 qualified him for the U20 World Cross Country championship in Serbia. The 18-year-old ran 26:13 and finished 68th out of 89 competitors… Daniel Frost (Hanover), a junior at Brandeis (Mass.) University, turned in his best 3,000-meter performance of the winter in mid-February, posting 9:54… Franklin Pierce was third at the nine-team Northeast 10 Conference championship. Freshman Ben Gilbert (Windsor) was 10th in the shot put at 41’ 11’’… Keene State freshman Griffin Urnezis (Meriden/Lebanon) ran a personal best and first-place 8:58 in the 3,000 meters during the Little East Conference championships. He was also part of a fifth-place 4x800 relay team as the Owls finished second out of eight teams… University of Vermont long jumper Knute Linehan (Strafford/Thetford) produced a personal best of 21’ 4’’ in late January. Teammate Tommy Wolfe (Grantham/Lebanon) finished sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:12) at the New England championships. The Catamounts were 12th of 29 teams… Ian Solberg (Hanover), a freshman high jumper at Northeastern (Mass.) University, has a personal best of 6’ 5’’… Zed McNaughton (Woodstock), a freshman at Hamilton, ran personal bests in the mile (4:42), the 3,000 meters (9:31) and the 800 meters (2:08) during the winter… Vassar (N.Y.) College freshman Sean Miller (Grantham/Lebanon) ran personal bests in six events during the winter season. They were the mile (4:37), the 800 meters (1:57), the 3,000 meters (9:12), the 400 meters (53.04), the 600 meters (1:26) and the 1,000 meters (2:37)… Franklin Pierce senior Tad Darrah ran a career-best 8:53 in the 3,000 meters at the Northeast 10 Conference championships. The Ravens were third out of nine teams.
Mary Baldwin (Va.) University finished sixth out of seven teams at the USA South Conference championships. Senior Hannah Eastridge (Windsor) was seventh out of seven competitors in the 60-meter hurdles (12.29) and 11th out of 11 competitors in the long jump (12’ 4’’) for the Fighting Squirrels… Plymouth State senior Mackenzie Labrie (Canaan/Mascoma) ran the 55-meter dash in a career-best 7.71 seconds during preliminaries at the Little East Conference championships. She finished eighth out of eight sprinters during that event’s final and was also part of the PSU’s winning 4x200 team (1:46). The Panthers finished fourth among eight schools… Also competing for Plymouth State was junior Abby Snow (Grantham/Lebanon), part of a 4x800 quartet that broke its previous program record by six seconds, finishing in 9:58. Another Panther, sophomore Kylie Taylor (Orford/Rivendell) posted personal bests in the shot put (29’ 6’’) and weight throw (40’ 6’’) in late January… St. Lawrence sophomore Amelia Berthold (Hanover) cleared 4’ 6’’ in the high jump to finish 13th at the Liberty League championships. She was seventh in the pentathlon, and the Saints finished sixth out of eight teams… UNH sophomore Opal Shinnlinger (Canaan/Mascoma) set a personal best in the weight throw at 44’ 11” in December. The toss was more than two feet farther than she’d thrown last season… Roanoke (Va.) College finished second at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship meet. Junior Eleanor Hinckley (Hartford) was 11th during the 60-meter preliminaries at 8.1 seconds. She was sixth during the 200 meters in 26.8 seconds… Trinity (Conn.) College senior Kennedy Mullen (Wilder/Hartford) was 16th during the 400 meters at 57.5 seconds at the NCAA Division III championships… Bethany Davis (White River Junction/Hartford), a VSU Castleton freshman, posted personal bests in the 800 meters (2:47), the mile (5:56) and the 1,000 meters (3:40) over two December meets… At Southern Maine, sophomore Janiah Young (Perkinsville/Windsor) ran a personal-best 7.36 seconds in the 55 meters to finish second at the Little East Conference championships. She also won the 200 meters (26.0) and was part of a second-place 4x200 relay team (1:48). USM won the conference title… University of New Haven (Conn.) freshman Audri Pettirossi (Hartland/Windsor) debuted in the pole vault for the Chargers, clearing 8’ 3’’ during her one winter meet… Keene State graduate student Grace Furlong (Lebanon) ran personal bests in the mile (5:35) and the 5,000 meters (18:23) during a pair of midseason meets… Chrissy Aman (Hanover), a Bates senior, established a personal best in the 5,000 meters (18:41) during the Maine Indoor Championships. Teammate sophomore Kayla Burnham (Hartland/Hartford) ran her fastest career times in the mile (5:58), the 5,000 (20:51) and the 3,000 (11:34) this winter… Bowdoin sophomore Charlotte Tagupa (Norwich/Hanover) set personal bests during the winter in the mile (5:48), the 3,000 meters (11:42), the 600 meters (1:53) and the 1,000 meters (3:23)… Faye Stevens (Barnard/Woodstock), a Vasar junior, was second in the pentathlon at the Liberty League championships and set a personal best in the 60-meter hurdles (9.54) that same day. She also ran career times in the 500 meters (1:26), the 400 meters (1:06) and the shot put (26’ 3’’) during the winter season… Colby-Sawyer senior Anna Biesczad (Grantham/Lebanon) covered the 60 meters in a personal best 9:52 seconds midway through the season. The Chargers were second in the five-team Great Northeast Athletic Conference championships… Jillian Barry (South Royalton/White River Valley), a freshman at Springfield (Mass.) College, established her best marks in the triple jump (32’ 9”) and the long jump (15’ 2”)… Southern Connecticut captured the Northeast 10 Conference title with junior Ella Maclean (Hanover) winning the 60 meters (7.65) and the 200 meters (24.73). She won the 60 meters in a career-best 7.57 at the 28-team Division III New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association championships in Boston.
