HARTLAND — The Upper Valley Land Trust has purchased 75 acres of land to create the Timotheus Pohl Conservation Area.

Named for the late Tim Pohl, the conservation area is near Hartland Three Corners, off Quechee Road and Bischoff Lane. The acreage includes part of the Hartland Winter Trails, a snowshoe and cross country ski trail that runs through town, according to a news release from the Hanover-based nonprofit organization.

“This is easily the most significant conservation project in Hartland in decades,” Rob Anderegg, chairman of the Hartland Conservation Commission, said in the release. “A public park of this size so close to the village is an amazing accomplishment.”

The purchase price for the land of $440,000 was funded, in part, by Vermont Housing and Conservation Board grant and a fundraising campaign led by Hartland residents.

Additional money raised will go toward improving the property, including “to make one or more of the winter trails suitable for all-season,” Upper Valley Land Trust Executive Director Jeanie McIntyre wrote in an email.
