College Notes: How Upper Valley high school grads did during winter sports season

A look at some of the Upper Valley residents who competed in collegiate varsity sports this winter:
Plymouth State men’s basketball was 12-13. Junior guard Max Galbraith (Hanover) appeared in 15 games and totaled 20 minutes. … Vermont State-Lyndon 8-18) featured freshman guard Christian Hathorn (Wilder/Hartford) and sophomore forward Rodger Petermann (Hartland/Windsor). Hathorn played in 24 games and averaged 10.4 minutes and 3.4 points per contest. Petermann appeared in 10 games and totaled 26 minutes. … VSU-Castleton (4-20) received 27.3 minutes and 12.1 points per game from junior guard Ben Seiler (Enfield/Mascoma). Sophomore guard Zach Thompson (Enfield/Mascoma) appeared in every game and started six times, averaging 5.0 points per contest and finishing second on the team with 53 assists. … Graduate student and guard Jon Willeman (West Lebanon/Lebanon) averaged 13.2 minutes and 2.5 points for Cedarville (Ohio) University (13-16). … VSU-Randolph (22-13) advanced to the United State Collegiate Athletic Association quarterfinals with junior guard Kaleb Swett (Windsor) appearing in 20 games and averaging 1.2 points per outing. Freshman teammate Gil Gordon (Norwich), a 6-foot-7 center, appeared in 11 games and played a total of 17 minutes.
Hailey Malozzi (KUA), a junior forward at Plymouth State (5-20), led the team with 9.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. … VSU-Lyndon (10-15) enjoyed the services of senior forward Chloe McIntire (Bradford/Oxbow), who started one of the 11 games in which she appeared and averted 5.6 minutes per contest. … Connecticut College was 10-14 and winless in NESCAC play. Junior guard Catherine Cole (Lebanon) played in every game, starting nine times and averaging 17.5 minutes and 5.1 points per game. … Maine was 15-16 with graduate student guard Olivia Rockwood (Windsor) starting 30 times in her 31 games played. She averaged 6.1 points and 3.1 rebounds per outing. … Tufts University (Mass.) was 15-11 with sophomore guard Stella Galanes (Sharon/Hanover) starting 11 of the 24 games in which she played, averaging 18.5 minutes and 7.0 points. The Jumbos reached the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament. … Junior forward Melissa Whitmore (Hanover) helped Trinity College (Conn.) reach the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament, where the Bantams (19-9) lost to top-ranked New York University. Whitmore was the team’s third-leading scorer with an average of 7.8 points per game and its third-leading rebounder at 5.1 boards per outing. … Rivier University (N.H.) freshman post player Sydney Perry (Windsor) started 20 of 26 games for the Raiders (15-11) averaging 22.2 minutes, 6.9 points and 7.2 rebounds per outing. … Perry’s sister, Reese Perry, a junior forward, helped Framingham State (Mass.) go 14-10. She played in 22 games, averaging 9.4 minutes and 1.3 points per contest. … Keene State (13-14) enjoyed the services of freshman guard Kiley Bundy (Claremont/Stevens), who appeared in 24 games and averaged 17.5 minutes and 5.9 points per contest.
Williams College (Mass.) junior forward Owen Stadheim (Lyme/Hanover) played in 21 games for the Ephs (8-13-3). He had four goals and seven assists. … Connecticut College was 9-14-2. Senior defenseman Devan Newhook (KUA) captained the Camels and played in every game, scoring twice and assisting three times. … Middlebury was 13-12-3 this winter with junior forward Zach Whitehead (Meridan) contributing three assists in 23 games. … Nathan Chickering (Grantham/Lebanon) was a junior forward at the University of New England (18-8-1), which lost in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. He had 10 goals and six assists during 27 games played. … Tufts (12-13-1) received four assists from sophomore defenseman Sylas Oberting (Hanover), who played 26 games for the Jumbos. … Trinity College was 16-7-2. Senior defenseman Theodore Griffin (KUA) played in every game and put up two goals and nine assists. … Assumption College (Mass.) was 13-19 and included sophomore forward Sean Donoghue (KUA) and his four goals and two assists in 26 games. … Hamilton College (N.Y.) was 21-7-1 and lost in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals, with sophomore defenseman Lucas Constantine (KUA) playing in 17 games and producing five assists. … Michigan (18–15-3) featured junior defenseman Luca Fantilli (KUA), who contributed a goal and five assists in 34 games. … Dartmouth (18-13-2) featured senior forward Steven Townley (Woodstock), who helped the Big Green reach the ECAC tournament semifinals for the second consecutive season and win its first Ivy League title since 2007. Townley had four goals and four assists while serving as captain and playing in every game. … Cornell (18-10-6) won the ECAC tournament title for a second consecutive season and reached the NCAA tournament with junior forward Sullivan Mack (KUA), who had eight goals and 12 assists in 30 games entering regional play.
Lake Forest College (Ill.) was 13-12-3 with sophomore forward Ella Maher (Lebanon) playing in every outing, contributing 11 goals and eight assists and finishing as the Foresters’ third-leading scorer. … Trinity sophomore forward Kate French (Norwich/KUA) had five goals and eight assists in 23 games for the Bantams (10-13-1). … New England College was 3-22-0 with sophomore forward Samantha Babbitt (Weathersfield/Woodstock) producing three goals and five assists while playing every game. … Junior defenseman Gretchen Dann (Hanover/KUA) suited up for Amherst College (Mass.), which was 22-5-1 entering the NCAA Division III semifinals. She had nine goals and 11 assists while playing in every game. The Mammoths are 69-12-3 the last three seasons. … Keene State’s first-year program, coached by former Dartmouth College assistant Rob Morgan, finished 13-12. Freshman defenseman Olivia Pollard (Grantham/Lebanon) posted two goals and two assists in 24 games. Junior teammate Grace Bazin, a Bellows Falls High graduate and defenseman who played at Hartford, had two goals and 10 assists in 22 games after finishing field hockey season. … Sophomore forward Alyssa Paquette (Claremont/Stevens) started two of the 22 games in which she appeared for Eastern Connecticut State (11-15-0), averaging 10.8 minutes, 2.0 rebounds and 1.8 points.
University of New Hampshire downhill junior Maia Garfield (Meriden) helped the Wildcats finish third out of five schools at the Dartmouth Carnival. She was 27th in the slalom (1:49.8). … Dartmouth junior Jack Lange (Lyme/Hanover), a first team Nordic All-American last season, battled injuries this season. He finished eighth among Big Green competitors at their home carnival, crossing the line in 50:30. … Finishing seventh among Dartmouth women’s Nordic skiers at that event was senior Hannah Chipman (Hanover), who crossed in 1:02.42. Chipman also competes at the international level in the biathlon. Finishing fifth in the giant slalom on the same day was Dartmouth senior Oliver Morgan (Hanover). His two-run time was 1:57.63. … Freshman competitor Evan Nichols (Lyme/Hanover) led St. Lawrence’s male Nordic skiers with a 39th-place finish in the 15K race at the Eastern Regionals in 37:29.
Skidmore senior diver Sophia May (Hartland/Hanover) finished 11th in the preliminary round and thus contributed 16 points towards her school’s fourth-place finish at the Liberty League championships. … Norwich won the five-team Great Northeast Athletic Conference championship for the third consecutive season with junior Brandy Lewis (Strafford) breaking her year-old record and winning the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:29) and winning the 200-yard IM (2:20). It was the third consecutive season Norwich won both the men’s and women’s championships. … Williams won the NESCAC title, senior breaststroker Issy Hiller (Woodstock) placing seventh in the 200 in 2:22, a season best. … Plymouth State was last at the 11-team Little East Conference championships. Sophomore Vicki Ni (Lebanon) swam in three preliminary races, finishing 23rd in the 200-yard freestyle (2:55), 31st in the 100-yard freestyle (1:21) and 34th in the 50-yard freestyle (34.9). … Tufts competed in the nonscored Boston Winter Open in early February and senior diver Nika Renshaw (Hanover) finished seventh in three-meter diving and eighth off the one-meter board.
Georgetown University sophomore Birhanu Harriman (Lebanon) finished third in 13:46 at the Big East Conference championships in the 5,000 meters. The Hoyas finished fourth out of nine teams. … Keene State sophomore Griffin Urnezis (Meriden/Lebanon) ran a personal best in the mile at 4:22 during the Little East Conference championships. The Owls were third out of nine teams. … University of Vermont junior long jumper Knute Linehan (Strafford/Thetford) was 18th at the IC4A/ECAC meet at 19 feet, 7 inches. Sophomore teammate Tommy Wolfe (Grantham/Lebanon) finished 15th in the 5,000 meters at 15:16. The Catamounts were eighth out of 27 schools. … Ian Solberg (Hanover), a sophomore long jumper at Northeastern University, had a personal best of 19-5 this winter. … Zed McNaughton (Woodstock), a sophomore at Hamilton, ran personal bests in the mile (4:39) and 800 meters (2:06) during February. … Vassar (N.Y.) College sophomore Sean Miller (Grantham/Lebanon) ran personal bests in the mile (4:17), 800 meters (1:53) and the 3,000 meters (8:26). … Payton Bessette (White River Junction/Hartford), a St. Lawrence freshman, appeared in six meets this winter, establishing college bests in the 60 meters (7.63), the 200 meters (24.77) and the 300 meters (39.79). … Franklin Pierce freshman Gabe Guillette (Hartford) finished fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.95) during a mid-January meet at Plymouth State.

She set personal bests this winter in the 60-meter hurdles (9.47), high jump (4-10), 400 meters (1:02.5), shot put (27-7), long jump (17-10) and shot put (27-7). … Roanoke College (Va.) finished fourth out of 10 teams at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship meet. Senior Eleanor Hinckley (Hartford) finished seventh in both the 60 meters (8.06) and the 200 meters (26.4). … Keene State sophomore Audri Pettirossi (Hartland/Windsor), a transfer from the University of New Haven (Conn.), competed twice in the pole vault for the Owls but did not score. … Bates was second out of eight Division III teams at the State of Maine championships. Junior Kayla Burnham (Hartland/Hartford) finished sixth out of six competitors in the 5,000 at 21:26. … Jillian Barry (South Royalton/White River Valley), a sophomore at Springfield (Mass.) College, established her best marks in the high jump (4-5), shot put (26-8), long jump (15-7), 60-meter hurdles (11.40) and the pentathlon (1,992). … Southern Connecticut State captured the Northeast 10 Conference title for a second consecutive years with senior Ella Maclean (Hanover) winning the 60 meters (7.7) and finishing third in the 200 meters (25.36).
