MANCHESTER CTR, Vt. — With just five team members, all sophomores, the Rivendell girls track team exceeded their coach’s expectation with a third place at the Vermont Division IV state meet on the strength of five first-place and three second-place finishes.

The Raptors scored 94 points in Thursday’s meet, finishing behind the winner Northfield (130 points) and Arlington Memorial (111) and ahead of 10 other teams.

Sydney Schoenbeck won the 100 meter hurdles in 15.93 seconds, the 300 hurdles (47.97), the high jump (1.52 meters) and the long jump (5.11 meters).

Teammate Mia Currier won the 100 meter dash (13.29), was third in the 200 and second in the long jump. Points were also scored with Lindsey O’Hearn taking second in the triple jump and fourth in the long jump and Harper Traendly getting second in the pole vault.

Allie Vogelien was fourth in the triple jump and the 4x100 relay team of Vogelien, Traendly, O’Hearn and Currier finished second.

“I had a feeling they could be in the top five but I never thought third place would be achievable,” said Mike Perry, the Hartford Hurricane track coach who also coaches Rivendell. “They surpassed the point total I thought they would get.”

But Perry also said the point total is the result of a strong commitment by the team, which travels to Hartford for practice.

“They have really been working hard,” Perry said.
