High school indoor track: Newport, Mascoma athletes win at states

Newport’s Callie Dixon, Mascoma’s Barnaby Diehn and Hanover’s Alexander Valentino were the Upper Valley’s top performers at the NHIAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships at Plymouth State University on Saturday.
Dixon won the girls shot put with a throw of 34 feet, 2 inches, and Diehn won the same event for the boys with a mark of 52 feet, 8 inches.
Valentino was second in both the 1,500- and 3,000-meter runs. Mascoma’s Gunner Currier finished third in the 3,000, and teammate Colin Myers was third in the shot put.
In the team scores, the Hanover girls finished fourth among 25 teams, just missing out on second place by a few points.
The Bears’ 4x800 relay team of Beatrice Swenson, Aria Deeb, Jacklyn Anderson and Alice Bell finished second. Hanover’s 4x400 team of Swenson, Bell, Poppy Collins and Maeve Bradley was third.
Hanover’s Grace Stewart was third in the 3,000, Bradley was fifth in the 55 dash and Bell finished third in the 600.
Newport’s Maddox Lovely scored in two events, taking fourth in the girls 55 dash and fifth 300.
Lebanon’s top finishers were Oscar Guttledge (sixth, 55-meter hurdles) and the girls 4x200 relay team of Banipreet Kaur, Jenney Lutz, Kristen Higgins and Rachel Horak, which was sixth.

Mascoma coach Rick Currier said this will be the first time the Royals will send three boys — Diehn, Myers and Currier0ù to the New England Championships on March 1 in Boston.
“We had scored one point in our history at the boys indoor state meet and today placed ninth as a team (with 25 schools competing),” Currier said. “Just simply an amazing day for the growth of our program.”
