Town Meeting preview: Property tax exemptions up for vote in Royalton

Articles of note: One article asks voters to create Recreation Reserve Fund and another asks voters to seed it with $2,000 from taxes. One article asks voters to exempt the 2.9-acre Paine’s Beach recreation area from property taxes for five years. Another asks for a five-year tax exemption for the Royalton Area Food Shelf, at 2955 Vt. Route 14, owned by the United Church of South Royalton.

Contested races: There are no contested races. Patrick Dakin is running unopposed for a three-year term on the Selectboard. Nell Gwin is running unopposed for a two-year seat on the Selectboard.

Budgets and spending articles: The proposed general fund budget is $1.8 million, of which $1.6 million is to come from taxes. The proposed highway budget is $1.3 million, of which $1.17 million is to come from taxes. Last year’s general fund budget was $1.78 million and highway was $1.1 million.

When, where and how to vote: Australian ballot voting to elect officers is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the gym at the White River Valley School, 223 S. Windsor Street. The floor meeting begins at 10 a.m. that day in the school gym.
