LEBANON — Motorists who will want to use Exit 17 to get on or off Interstate 89 in Lebanon this coming Sunday and Monday nights should take note that the northbound and southbound ramps will be alternately closed while work crews grind up the road surface in preparation for repaving.

New Hampshire Department of Transportation issued an alert Thursday that the Exit 17 ramps will be closed on successive nights between the hours of 7 p.m. on Sunday and 7 a.m. on Monday and again between the hours of 7 p.m. on Monday and 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

During the closures, traffic will be redirected to use Exit 16 (southbound) in Enfield or Exit 18 (northbound) in Lebanon to access open ramps.

Repaving of the ramps is expected later this month, although specific dates have not been set, Kyle Hamel, civil engineer with construction bureau of DOT, said on Thursday. In the meantime, he said the “micro-milling” process to remove the road surface “rides almost as if it is smooth” on vehicle tires.

Hamel said only a single ramp at a time will be closed during the 12-hour overnight windows to minimize inconvenience for motorists.

The night work at Exit 17 is part of a $6.3 million state highway project that entails removing old surface pavement, repaving, guardrail work and new signage on the ramps between Exit 16 and Exit 20 in West Lebanon.

Pike Industries of Belmont, N.H., is the prime contractor on the project.
