Local roundup: Hartford softball bounces back to split doubleheader with Springfield

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — After suffering a 6-3 loss to visiting Springfield in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader at Maxfield Sports Complex, the Hartford High softball team came roaring back for an 18-3 victory in the nightcap, scoring 11 runs in the third inning.

Serenitee Martel had three hits, including a double, and Becca Keelty and Faith Brown each hit safely twice for Hartford. Martel, a freshman making her first high school start in the pitcher’s circle, went the distance, allowing three hits and striking out seven.

Junior catcher Harper Robinson made her season debut after missing Hartford’s first three games with an injury. She reached base three times Saturday evening on two walks and a single, coming around to score each time.

The Hurricanes were playing for the first time in nine days thanks to a postponement earlier in the week.

“We knew it was going to take us a hot minute coming out today to really get back into it,” Hartford coach Danielle Tenney said. “We really needed this game to get our momentum back up and liven up a little bit.”

Hartford (3-2) is back home Monday to take on Fair Haven.

Pembroke 8, Lebanon 2

LEBANON — Raiders freshman pitcher Ava Kaercher struck out 16 Spartans and walked none, but lackluster fielding and numerous passed balls contributed to the hosts’ third consecutive NHIAA Division II loss.

Pembroke (4-5) had 10 hits while Lebanon (2-5) had eight hits. The Raiders received two hits and an RBI from Kaercher, two hits from Abby Braley and a double from Rya Wykes. Lebanon plays the first of four games in five days when it visits Merrimack Valley on Monday.

BRADFORD, Vt. — Cayleigh Bean led the undefeated Olympians with five RBIs on a pair of home runs in the second and fourth innings.

In the circle, Brianna Gray allowed four hits and two runs over four innings with seven strikeouts and Noemi Rosa closed it out with an inning of relief.

Oxbow got on the board in the first with a Mazie Bourgeois solo homer and scored five in the fifth. Bourgeois, Hadlee Allen and Bean had multiple hits and Makenna Simmons, Maggi Ellsworth, Faith Eastman, Braylee Phelps, Rosa and Abbey Peavey getting one each.

“These girls never cease to amaze me every time they step on the field,” said Oxbow coach Chuck Simmons. “Today was a fun day to be able to move players around.”

Oxbow (8-0) is plays Harwood at home on Tuesday.

Bow 20, Hanover 2

BOW, N.H. — Hanover scored a pair of runs in the first on hits by Sophie Wise and Emma Campfield before the Falcons offense came to life. 

Campfield, Wise, Abby Campfield, and Lily Smith each had a hit for the Bears (0-7), who travel to John Stark on Monday.

Newport 22, Sunapee 0

NEWPORT — The Tigers continued a dominant run through NHIAA Division III as they improve to 6-0.

Newport has outscored its opponents 87-15 and will look to stay perfect against Conant at home on Monday.

Thetford 6, Harwood 4

MORETOWN, Vt. – McKayla Stanley pitched her first complete game of the year and the Panthers had 12 hits on the day.

Stanley had six strikeouts and allowed four runs on eight hits.

Eiea Morgan had three hits and an RBI and Kelsie Bogie and Taylor West had two hits each for Thetford (4-2).  

“The Girls were sure-handed in the field with only two errors,” Panthers coach Michelle Morgan said. “The girls played hard today and made some incredible plays. It was a tight game and the girls stayed relaxed and composed.” 

Thetford, which has won four straight after opening the season with two losses, plays Spaulding at home Tuesday.

Leland & Gray 12, White River Valley 11

TOWNSHEND, Vt. — The Rebels scored seven runs in the fifth to extend their one-run lead and the Wildcats’ comeback effort with four runs in the seventh fell short.

Mackenzie Vesper scored twice and had two hits with two RBI for WRV, while Tanner Drury scored four times and drove in two and Sadie Kinsley had two RBIs. Carlie Robinson struck out five in five innings.

The Wildcats (1-8) are home Monday against Poultney.

Mount Anthony 30, Windsor 2

BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Yellowjackets were no match for the top-ranked VPA Division I Patriots (4-2), who led 13-0 after three innings.

Windsor scored in the fourth on two hit batters, a single by Gianna Felice and two-run single by Lisa Todd.

“We never could get our bats going and mentally we weren't ready to compete today,” Windsor coach Wendy Moody said.  

Windsor (3-4) heads to Springfield on Monday.

BaseballLebanon 6, Pembroke 5

LEBANON — The Raiders scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth to break a 3-3 tie, then hung on for the win after Pembroke got two back in the seventh.

The Raiders had 11 hits on the day, including three from Spencer Cunninhgam. Nick Brill had two hits and an RBI and Dominic Calandrella and Ben Hewett drove in a run each.

“Spencer came up big today at the plate,” Lebanon coach Chauncey Wood said. “He took advantage of his opportunity. Bats woke up a little today. We just need to keep it going.”

On the mound, Sam Bates gave up three runs on seven hits over 3 2/3 innings and Brill surrendered a pair of runs.

Lebanon (3-4) travels to Merrimack Valley on Monday.

Hanover 11, Bow 1

NORWICH — The Bears got five shutout innings from Freddie Mierke and pounded out 12 hits to remain undefeated at 7-0.

Freshman Jojo Drent had a big day with three hits and four RBIs, and Jackson McBride and Jake Toulmin added two hits each.

In the first, Drent drove in two runs with a single after a double by McBride, a walk and hit batter loaded the bases. A single by Sam Loescher in the third scored Toulmin to make it 3-0, then Hanover went up 5-0 on a two-run single by Drent in the fourth and added four in the fifth and two more in the seventh.

Catcher Hayden Avard threw out two would-be Bow base stealers. Hanover is at John Stark on Monday.

White River Valley 6, Leland & Gray 0

TOWNSHEND, Vt. — Robby McShinsky pitched a complete-game shutout for the Wildcats, allowing five hits and striking out four with no walks and also drove in a run.

Donovan Craven had three RBIs, Wyatt Cadwell drove in a pair with two hits, and Ty Couture and Brayden Russ each scored twice.

White River Valley (7-2) welcomes Williamstown next Saturday.

Thetford 18, Harwood 13

MORETOWN, Vt. — Thetford Academy won a wild one that included a steal of home by Xander Oshoniyi and a triple play to end the game.

Thetford went ahead early on six runs in the fourth and scored multiple runs in the fifth and sixth that thwarted Harwood’s comeback attempt.

The final outs came on a line drive caught by pitcher Jacob Gilman, who doubled up the runner on first then got the out at second on an appeal of the runner leaving too early.

Nolan Pepe scored three runs for Thetford with two hits, and Boone Fahey went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Gilman scored a run and stole three bases, and Mason Fahey drove in three with a double.

“We got contributions from many players today,” Thetford coach Phil Chaput said. “Mason had a big hit, Liam Brooks executed a safety squeeze bunt, and Evan Patterson made a highlight reel catch in right field. Errors were made on both sides, but I'm proud of our composure. We stayed tough and battled back.”

Thetford (4-2) is at Lake Region on Monday.

Mount Anthony 12, Windsor 0 (5 innings)

BENNINGTON, Vt. — The Yellowjackets were no-hit by the VPA Division I Patriots (7-2) who were up 9-0 after two innings.

Windsor (0-7) hosts Bellows Falls on Monday.

Green Mountain 11, Woodstock 6

CHESTER, Vt. — The Wasps fell to 1-4 against the undefeated and top-ranked VPA Division III Chieftains (8-0).

Rutland 7, Hartford 3

RUTLAND, Vt. — Zach Johnson, Matt Hayes and Trenton Bird each drove in a run for the Hurricanes in the loss. Rutland scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to turn a one-run deficit into a victory.

Hartford (4-2) travels to Fair Haven on Monday.

Girls LacrosseLebanon 10, Bishop Brady 9

LEBANON — Maddie Jewell had six goals and an assist to lead the Raiders’ offense, and a big save by Drew Kantor with under a minute to play on a point-blank shot preserved the win.

Lindsey Stark had one goal and one assist for Lebanon with Sara Forman, Abby Ripley and Norah Burns adding a goal each. Kantor made eight saves.

Lebanon led by three at halftime and increased that to four before tired legs from four games in six days allowed a Giants comeback that fell short.

“The team did a great job on the draw today with Norah Burns, Maddie Jewell and Sara Forman taking control with help from Delaney Deshane,” Lebanon coach Sara Ecker said. “For the second game in a row, our defense was excellent all over the field as were our ground balls.”

Lebanon (2-5) hosts Laconia on Monday.

Boys LacrosseHartford 10, Colchester 3

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — In a battle of top-ranked teams in VPA Division II, the Hurricanes got six goals from Joseph Barwood to send the Lakers (4-1) to their first loss of the year.

Austin St. Peters had two goals and an assist for Hartford, with Bryce Sobelski and Brayden Trombly getting a goal each and Graham Thomson making 10 saves.

Hartford (8-0) host BFA-St. Albans on Monday.

Timberlane 15, Hanover 5

PLAISTOW, N.H. — The Owls (9-1) scored early against Hanover with two quick goals to set the tone for the day.

Mateo Trimble had two goals for Hanover to go along with a goal and two assists by Jack Gardner and two assists from Sam Bagatell. Henry Cotter had 16 saves for the Bears.

“The Bears had a very thin roster with four starters out but managed to continue their gritty competitive play, posting a comparable result to the majority of the Timberlane scores,” Hanover coach Sean Murphy said.

Hanover (4-3) is at Pembroke on Monday.

Girls TennisHanover 7, Salem 2

HANOVER — The Bears improved to 7-1 and will travel to Manchester Central on Monday.

Burr & Burton 7, Hartford 0

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — The Hurricanes went to a super-tie breaker in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles, but could not pull out a win and fell to 0-4 on the year.

Hartford hosts Brattleboro on Tuesday.

Outdoor Track and FieldThetford girls fourth

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. — Thetford’s Madelyn Durkee won the 200 meters and the long jump and was second in the 100 to lead the Panthers to a fourth-place finish among 21 teams at the Twilight South Burlington Invitational.

Durkee’s teammate, Charlize Brown, took second in the 200, 400 and long jump and was third in the pole vault. Oxbow’s Noell Kosolwsky had a third-place finish in the shot put.

The Panther boys finished sixth among 22 teams, led by Ulysses Junker-Boyce with a first-place finish in the triple jump and second in the 200. Finn Linehan of Thetford was second in the pole vault. Jordan Davis of Hartford won the discus and was third in the javelin. James Chafouleas of Hanover won the javelin and was third in the discus.
