Local Roundup: Newport advances in softball playoffs

Newport 3, Stevens 1
NEWPORT — Zoey Lord struck out 13 in five innings of relief and the Tigers advanced to the NHIAA Division quarterfinals with a win over the No. 14 seed Stevens Cardinals.
Stevens scored in the first on an unearned run and Newport tied it in the second with a steal of home by Jesenya Santana. A single by Lexi Durgin in the third gave Newpor the lead and they tacked on an insurance run in the fifth. Lord bunted for a base hit and went to second on a pass ball. She took third on another pass ball and came home on an overthrow to third base. Hannum pitched the first two innings, giving up one hit with one strikeout. Lord allowed one hit as well.
Newport (15-2) will now face Gilford, the sixth seed, at home Saturday in a quarterfinal matchup. The Golden Eagles (14-2) defeated the 11th seeded Berlin, 5-4.
Newport beat Gilford 6-0 on May 19th. Last year, the undefeated and No. 1 seeded Tigers lost to Gilford, seeded fourth, in the semifinals, 6-4.
Bow 1, Lebanon 0
Highlights: Both teams were strong in the circle on Wednesday, but Bow was just a little bit stronger at the plate in their 1-0 victory over the Raiders. Ava Kaercher started the game for the Raiders and recorded 18 outs in 6 innings. Kaercher struck out 15 batters on the day. The pitcher also surrendered five hits and one run over six innings while walking two. A passed ball put Bow on the board in the bottom of the second. Taylor Ouellette earned the win for Bow. The pitcher allowed three hits and zero runs over seven innings, striking out eight and walking none. Avelina Pentella, Amy Dixon-Vestal and Cathryn Bachelder each collected one hit for the Raiders. Reis Domini, B. Whittacker, P. Ramos, Cadence Malone and Lauren Oppold each had one hit for Bow.
