Highlights: Due to rescheduling efforts, both teams were missing players from the top of their lineups, and Milford was only able to bring five athletes. The individual matches featured good tennis by both sides, especially toward the top of the ladder. Milford is a fairly new team, and they put up a good fight. Like many teams in our division, they feature great coaching and great sportsmanlike players. We were slightly delayed in playing due to an unexpected shower just before match time; everyone’s patience helped in a less-than-ideal situation.

Coach’s quote: “Great match today to conclude our regular season, and we want to thank Milford for their understanding and goodwill, given the weather and rescheduling. We await seedings for the playoffs and hope to dig deep to make a good run at it.” — Lebanon’s Tammy Arado and Jarrod Shaheen

Crew

Hanover wraps up season
at New England Regatta

Hanover’s rowers sent six boats, three girls and three boys, to the New England Interscholastic Rowing Association Regatta on Saturday, with the girls second boat having the best results.

“The racing was very competitive, and we saw some of the fastest crews in the country at this race,” Hanover coach Julie Stevenson said. The regatta invites a mix of private and public schools.

The girls second boat, seeded 11th, won the petite finals on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass., and finished seventh overall among 18 boats.

“Coxswain Anya Pearl steered and called a great race, and the boat figured out how to be the most efficient they have been all season,” Stevenson said.

The boys second boat, seeded 12th, finished second in the petite finals, missing out on a win by a second, and eighth among 18 invited boats.

“They have been getting faster each week, as they have some very new rowers in their boat,” Stevenson said. “Roy Lucas and Peter Arvold only started rowing in March and have caught on quickly adding to their crew. Nathanial Eakin-Picconi set a steady pace for the crew to finish well above their seed.”

The boys first boat, seeded 12th, was second in the petite finals and eighth overall.

“They had a beautiful afternoon race and put a very competitive field in the petite final behind them,” Stevenson said. “Oliver Benedict steered a flawless course and pushed his crew to finish well above their seed.”

The girls first boat finished at their seed, 12th, but was within seconds of eighth place.

“Hanover was winning most of the race but in the final stretch couldn’t hold on to the win,” Stevenson said. “They showed increased speed by cutting their loss to Hingham (Mass.) last week by more than half.”

The boys third and girls third boats put up a fight in the morning but came up short of the finals, Stevenson said.

Summing up the year, Stevenson said the boys had a record number of rowers led by “a wonderful group of seniors who have created quite a buzz about rowing on the boys side of the boathouse. They are led by captains Aidan Beyer (bound for Williams College) and David Viazmenski (heading to Dartmouth).”

On the girls side of the boathouse, senior Claire Uiterwyk will be rowing for Texas next year, Maya Veraka will row for Ithaca and Finch Shepard will be rowing for Simmons.
