A question of safety?

On March 20, the New Hampshire House approved HB 148, which allows businesses and government agencies to segregate prisons, bathrooms and locker rooms based upon the biological sex a person was assigned at birth. Rep. Jonah Wheeler, D-Peterborough, justified his yea vote by stating that some of his female cisgender constituents expressed that they would feel unsafe in a space that allows transgender women to freely enter. I have to wonder how safe they will feel when transgender men are forced to share that space with them instead?

Protest on April 5

An article by the Washington Post (“How Trump is disregarding norms, testing limits”; March 27) states that 1,000 law professors and teachers signed a letter stating they thought the country was in the midst of a constitutional crisis. Others say no, it’s a crisis of democracy. One law scholar says it’s a crisis of the republic.

Language matters and the common word used here is “crisis.” Let’s face it, we are in a crisis with Trump and Musk directing the chaos.

April 5 is a national day of witness, marches and demonstrations with the theme of “Hands Off.” Our local event is in White River Junction 1 to 2:30 p.m., with people gathering at the Amtrak station and lining the streets across to West Lebanon.

Let’s show up and tell the administration to keep their Hands Off of our Constitution and our democracy!

A pro-DEI boycott

It’s hard to know how to fight back against an administration whose values are so different from those of our community. The Rev. Jamal Bryant, the pastor of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church near Atlanta, has proposed to his congregation that they boycott Target because of its withdrawal of its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Trump and his cronies are making it easier for corporations to ignore any commitment to community values. By our purchasing decisions we can bring pressure to bear on companies that have direct access to government decision making. Target depends on Easter sales. Let’s let it know that we strongly disagree with it’s kowtowing to Republican party policies which are anathema to our community.

Terror all around

Elon Musk calls the people who vandalize a few of his car dealerships terrorists while he threatens the benefits of millions of Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare recipients. And he fires dedicated, experienced federal employees who provide essential services to all Americans.

So who’s the terrorist?
