CHARLESTOWN — Voters will have a chance to discuss the town’s operating budget and other items at Saturday’s deliberative session.
The session, slated for 10 a.m. at the town hall at 19 Summer St., will include a petition article to establish historic districts downtown along Main Street and part of River Road in North Charlestown.
The historic districts would help town officials maintain the character of these two areas through specific zoning ordinances, according to the text of the proposal. If voters approve this article in March, certain construction, landscaping and demolition projects would require prior approval from the town.
The town’s proposed budget of $6,657,932 includes $5,587,713 for operating expenses, $602,985 for the water fund and $467,234 for the sewer fund.
If voters defeat the budget proposal in March, a default budget of $6,283,336 would go into effect ($5,237,067 for the town budget, $610,781 for the water fund and $441,448 for the sewer fund).
The town’s proposed operating budget of $5,587,713 is $25,168, or 0.44 percent, lower than the $5,612,881 figure voters approved last year.
Another article asks voters whether the town can discontinue a 400-foot portion of George Moulton Way. Town Clerk Patricia Chaffee said a company named GreenSource bought a property on George Moulton Way and requested the 400-foot portion for a gate to an industrial park.
Official ballot voting for these articles is slated for March 11 at the Charlestown Senior Center at 223 Old Springfield Road. Polls are open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
