Canaan to hold special town meeting

CANAAN — A town vote is scheduled to take place on Tuesday to cure the late posting of the Town Meeting warrant from earlier this year.

Voting will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Emergency Operations Center, 52 NH Route 118, Canaan.

At the special town meeting, residents will vote on the single article, which reads: “Shall the Town vote to cure the procedurally defective warrant posting for the 2025 Annual Town Meeting?”

Canaan posted the signed warrant the day after its Jan. 27 deadline. Missing this deadline, which is not uncommon, requires a hearing and a vote to correct it.

The town held a similar vote in May, but it was void as voting wasn’t kept open for the entirety of the hour required, Canaan Town Administrator Chet Hagenbarth said in a telephone interview.

There was a public hearing on July 8 that discussed why the town was holding the vote.

This Tuesday’s vote requires a three-fifths ballot vote to approve the article.
