Town Meeting preview: Bethel to consider replacing lister with professional assessor

Article of note: One article would eliminate the office of the town lister and replace it with a professionally qualified assessor.

Contested races: Adam Stearns and Paul S. Vallee are vying for a two-year term on the Selectboard.

Budgets and spending articles: The proposed operating budget is $3.1 million, of which $2.6 million is to be raised by taxes. Last year, voters approved a budget of $2.66 million, with $2.42 million to come from taxes. Voters also will be asked to appropriate $155,000 for the White River Valley Ambulance, $32,000 for social service agencies, $27,500 for the Bethel library and and $25,000 for the Bethel Food Shelf.

When, where and how to vote: Town Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 5 at 10 a.m. in the gym at White River Unified Middle School. Voting for town officers by Australian ballot will take place at the same place from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day.
