WEST LEBANON — Two cats died in a three-alarm fire that caused “significant damage” to an Elm Street West home, the Lebanon Fire Department said in a news release.

Two adults and a dog safely escaped the Monday night blaze, the cause of which is “currently under investigation but not believed to be suspicious in nature,” according to the release.

The Lebanon Fire Department arrived a little after 11 p.m. and, after encountering “a heavy smoke condition with a working fire in the basement,” requested a second alarm.

“The ambient temperatures combined with the humidity and rapid-fire development quickly taxed personnel on scene requiring a third alarm to be requested,” the release said. Temperatures hit the low 90s in West Lebanon on Monday.

One firefighter had to be evaluated for heat exhaustion and was later released from the hospital, the release said.

The fire was declared under control a little before midnight, although firefighters remained on scene until about 2 a.m. on Tuesday. The home is “currently uninhabitable,” the release said.

Fire departments from Hartford, Hanover, Norwich, Enfield, Canaan, Plainfield, Woodstock and Grantham provided mutual aid.
