NEWPORT — A nearly week-long police investigation into the search for accomplices who had fled the scene of an assault in Newport has led to arrests and criminal charges against two 21-year-old Newport men, police said Thursday.

The charges against the pair of men follow the arrest earlier this week of a Newport juvenile charged in an Aug. 29 incident on Whipple Road in which an adult male was assaulted and a gun was fired but did not strike anyone, according to police.

One of the 21-year-old men faces felony charges of riot, accomplice to criminal threatening with a firearm and hindering apprehension, along with a misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to a news release issued by Newport police Thursday morning.

The other 21-year-old man is charged with a felony count of second-degree assault and a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Newport police said both men were taken into custody without incident and were arraigned on Wednesday in Newport District Court. They are being held on preventative detention without bail at Sullivan County jail pending future court hearings.
