A man is dead and a woman seriously injured following a fiery crash on Interstate 93 Wednesday evening, and state police are asking witnesses to come forward.
State police were called to the area near mile marker 32.4, just past the I-93 interchange with Interstate 89 around 5:41 p.m. for a two-vehicle crash.
On scene, police found a white sedan and a blue SUV on fire in the woods on the right side of the road, police said. The sedan’s driver, an adult man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV, a woman, was said to have serious but non-life-threatening injuries; she was taken to a nearby hospital.
An autopsy of the sedan’s driver is set for Thursday by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
The drivers have not been publicly identified; their names will be released once their relatives are notified and after further investigation.
While investigating, two lanes on I-93 southbound were closed.
The investigation is continuing. Witnesses told police that “multiple vehicles” were reportedly speeding before the crash.
The state police’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Unit and the state Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene. Bow and Concord fire departments were also on scene.
