WHITE RIVER JUNCTION — In light of this year’s poor hay season, the Vermont Agency of Agriculture recently released an online livestock feed directory to connect buyers and sellers across the Northeast, including Canada.

Flooded fields and general wet weather this summer has led to what some Upper Valley farmers say is the worse hay season in memory. Feed shortages are likely, and prices are expected to rise.

The directory can be used as advertising space for sellers of hay, alfalfa, corn, soy, silage and haylage, and include details about organic status and whether the feed is available for delivery. Those looking for feed can view availability, location and pricing.

“If you are aware of farmers with crop-based livestock feed for sale, please encourage them to register it on this site so that those in need may become aware of it,” wrote Vermont State Veterinarian Kristen Haas in a news release. “If you know farmers or livestock owners in need, encourage them to check back to this site periodically for feed products for sale.”

Data is expected to grow on the site as more entries are made.

The directory can be accessed at this link: https://cloud.agriculture.vermont.gov/FeedFinder/HaySell.aspx
