Local roundup: Hurricanes storm back to down Otters

BRANDON, Vt. — The Hartford High boys basketball team hasn’t won a state title since 1929. Could this be the year?

The Hurricanes downed Otter Valley, 64-52, on Monday night, overcoming an early 12-point deficit to lead by four points at halftime and eventually improve to 13-2. Hartford’s losses were to undefeated Fair Haven (14-0), which leads VPA Division II, and D-I member Mount Mansfield (8-7).

Hartford won its fourth consecutive contest behind 15 points from Brayden Trombly, 14 from Christian Hathorn and 13 from Brody Tyburski. The Otters fell to 6-10.

The Hurricanes are at rival Woodstock (4-9) on Friday, then have three more games to prepare for Fair Haven’s visit in the regular-season finale on Feb. 23.

Sanborn 62, Hanover 58

KINGSTON, N.H. — The Bears couldn’t win their second consecutive NHIAA Division II game and fell to 1-12. The Indians improved to 3-9.

Ryan McLaughlin led Hanover with 30 points. The Bears host Milford (6-7) on Tuesday.

Mascoma 90, Hillsboro-Deering 40

WEST CANAAN — The Royals dropped the Hillcats to 0-13, receiving 25 points from sophomore Tanner Moulton. Zach Thompson and James Thomas each added 13 points. Mascoma visits Hopkinton (12-2) on Tuesday.

Thetford 66, Blue Mountain 41

WELLS RIVER, Vt. — Mitchell Parkman scored 24 points, Jacob Gilman added 15 and the Panthers jumped to 11-3. Thetford visits Lake Region (2-10) on Wednesday.

Fair Haven 72, Windsor 58

WINDSOR — Maison Fortin scored 25 points, Corey Lockwood added 13 and Roger Petermann chipped in 11 points, but the Yellowjackets fell to 5-10 while the Slaters moved to 14-0. Windsor hosts Springfield on Thursday.

RUTLAND — The Wasps tumbled to 4-9 while the Green Wave improved to 8-5. Woodstock hosts Hartford (13-2) on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL White River Valley 51, Woodstock 22

WOODSTOCK — Tanner Drury scored 16 points to lead the Wildcats (10-4). Ashlyn Rhoades scored eight of her 11 points during the first quarter.

The Wasps (3-12) received seven points from Norah Harper.

WRV hosts Mount St. Joseph (6-9) on Tuesday while Woodstock, which has lost eight consecutive games, hosts Hartford (9-6) on Wednesday.

Hillsboro-Deering 59, Mascoma 47

HILLSBORO, N.H. — The Hillcats (2-11) snapped a seven-game losing streak while handing the Royals (3-10) their fourth consecutive loss.

Mascoma hosts Hopkinton (9-4) on Tuesday.

GIRLS HOCKEY Woodstock 7, Brattleboro 1

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. — Senior forward Isabel Konijnenberg had three goals and two assists and scored her 100th career point as the Wasps improved to 12-3. Brattleboro slid to 2-12.

Kassidy Haley had two goals and two assists for Woodstock, which is at U-32 (6-9-1) on Wednesday.

EAST MONTPELIER, Vt. — The Hurricanes improved to 7-8 with a defeat of the Raiders (6-9-1). Hartford hosts Middlebury (10-6) on Wednesday.
