Local roundup: Hanover baseball opens season with big win

NORWICH — The Hanover High baseball team exploded for eight runs during the second inning of their season opener Monday, powering to a 12-2 defeat of ConVal in five innings at the Dresden Fields.

A two-run double by Jackson McBride put the Bears ahead for good. They collected 13 hits with McBride and Sam Sacerdote each belting two doubles. Jack McGrath, Sam Loescher and Sean Nam each had two hits.

Sacerdote, who has committed to play at Maine’s Bowdoin College next season, pitched the first three innings, allowing two runs, one of them earned. He struck out five opponents and walked one. Ian Smith went the final two innings, allowing no runs and two hits, while striking out two and walking none.

ConVal fell to 0-3. Hanover hosts John Stark (2-0) on Wednesday.

SOFTBALLOxbow 24, Northfield 3

BRADFORD, Vt. — A 17-run third inning put the contest away for the Olympians (1-0), who pounded out 16 hits. Faith Eastman and Anastase Bourgeois each had three hits for Oxbow during its opener.

Briana Gray struck out 11 Marauders while allowing three runs and two hits during five innings in the circle.

“She had great control and hit her spots,” said coach Chuck Simmons, whose team visits Blue Mountain on Tuesday.

GIRLS LACROSSEHartford 13, Vergennes-Mount Abraham 4

VERGENNES, Vt. — Addison Cadwell put up five goals and six assists and Alice Piper added four goals and the Hurricanes (4-0) scored the Vermont Division II game’s final six goals. VMA, which lost last year’s division title game to Hartford, fell to 1-2.

Audrey Rupp had two goals and Madison Barwood had two goals and an assist. Hartford hosts U32 (3-1) on Wednesday.

Hanover 18, Keene-Monadnock 1

HANOVER — Kali McDonnell produced six goals and an assist and the Bears won their season and NHIAA Division II opener,. Maeve Lee had five goals and three assists and Maggie Higgins chipped in two goals and five assists.

Hanover, which led, 12-1, at halftime, visits Kennett (0-1) on Thursday.

Derryfield 12, Lebanon 6

LEBANON — Maddie Jewell had four goals and 10 draw controls and Drew Kantor stopped 12 shots, but the Raiders dropped their season opener to the Wildcats (2-0).

“We played pretty well,” said coach Sara Ecker. “A little sloppy, but the hustle, effort and grit were there.”

Hadley Rich and Norah Burns scored for the hosts, who also received assists from Lindsey Stark and Abby Ripley. Lebanon, which trailed, 5-1, after halftime, visits Coe-Brown (0-1) on Wednesday.

BOYS LACROSSEBishop Brady 5, Lebanon 4 (OT)

CONCORD — The Raiders received 14 saves from James Barnett but dropped their season and NHIAA Division III opener to the Green Giants (1-2). Otto Bourne had a goal and an assist.

“He put forth a superhuman effort and pretty much did not come off the field,” said coach Cole Flannery, whose team is at Milford on Tuesday.

Benji Madory, Abe Pearson and V.J. Sites also scored for Lebanon.
