Upper Valley runners finish strong at Manchester Invitational

MANCHESTER — Megan Faris, Leah Perreard and Andrew Valentino of Hanover, Mascoma’s Gunner Currier, Thetford’s Ava Hayden and Brady Sloop and Annelies Hanna of Lebanon were among top finishers in the Manchester Invitational 5K Cross Country meet at Derryfield Park on Saturday.

In the large school girls division, Faris was seventh (19:22) and Perreard 12th (19:42) in a field of 222 runners and the Bears placed third among 31 teams from around New England. Brooke Strauss of Glastonbury (Ct.) won the race in 18:18.

For the boys, Valentino finished 10th with a time of 16:28, leading his team to a fourth place finish in the large school division with 36 teams and 250 runners.

Mascoma finished 10th among the 41 teams in the small school boys division with the Royals’ Currier finishing 8th (17:00) just ahead of Sloop (17:04) from Thetford in the field of 280. In the small schools varsity girls race, Hayden of Thetford was fifth (20:34) among 219 runners and Lebanon’s Hanna was 14th (21:22).

Also scoring for the Hanover girls were Aria Deeb 29th and Millie Larrick 43rd and for Hanover boys Ryan Faris was 23rd, Ben Groves 31st and Nandeesh Jain 47th. Tam Gavenas of Phillips Academy won the race in 15:24.

In the boys small school division, Ian Kiefer (60th) was Lebanon’s top finisher. Joanne Behle of Mascoma was 119th and Laethy Golden of Claremont Christian Academy finished 108th. Michael Upton of Catholic Memorial won the boys small division race in 16:32 and Madeleine Lane of Hopkinton was the girls winner in 19:28.

Highlights: Hanover played a tough Pelham team to 8-0 at halftime. Hanover defense was outstanding, led by Murphy, Gammell and Longmoore. Caleb Franklin also played well on defense.

Key players: White River Valley — Logan Scott, Olivia Tuller and Sarah Rule won balls out of the air, ran through balls, and closed down Bellows Falls’ passes.

Highlights: Rule tracked down a free kick and shot hard to the left of the keeper to tie up the match right after the half. Rhianna Young came out of goal to shut down a BF breakaway.
