Town: ‘Abnormalities’ seen  at Quechee dam, stay away

QUECHEE — Hartford officials are warning pedestrians away from the Quechee dam and gorge after finding “abnormalities” at the dam near Simon Pearce, according to a Thursday post to the town’s website.

The town is asking that pedestrians avoid the area around the Ottauquechee River from the dam to the Quechee Gorge while it waits for state officials to inspect the dam. The dam and surrounding area were hard hit by rising waters earlier this week. Given the statewide damage from flooding this week, acting Hartford Town Manager Gail Ostrout said she was uncertain when state officials might inspect the dam.

“Until it is deemed safe the areas will remain closed,” she said in a Thursday email.
