Hartford cancels youth fishing derby

QUECHEE — The annual youth fishing derby at Dewey’s Pond this Saturday has been canceled due to poor ice conditions.

The Quechee event, co-hosted by the Hartford Parks and Recreation Department and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department, was originally scheduled to take place Feb. 3, but was postponed because the ice was not thick enough.

Organizers had tentatively rescheduled it to Saturday, March 2, but the ice still isn’t sufficient.

“Although ice depths in some areas may be suitable for ice fishing, there is a considerable amount of open water on the north side of the pond that starts on the western end by the launch area and continues eastwardly along the bank,” the Parks and Recreation Department wrote in a statement posted to its Facebook page. “These very wet conditions make for a liability risk to conduct a community wide public event.”
