ENFIELD — Two new businesses will soon be opening on Route 4 in Enfield.

Sean and Kirby Bonnell are opening Energizing Edge — an energizing tea and shake shop — and Athletic Edge — a 24-hour gym — next to Ziggy’s Pizza. The space was previously occupied by Miracle Thrift Store and Pellegrino’s, a deli and produce business.

After moving to Enfield last March, the couple started to think about opening a business in town.

“We’ve been looking for a while, but we feel this is the best location in terms of helping people as they’re commuting,” Sean Bonnell said in a phone interview. “We’re really trying to be able to provide a good option for that.”

The couple is aiming to open Energizing Edge by the end of December and the gym by mid-February. Enfield will be their third location for their shake and energizing tea businesses: Nutrition on the Green has been open in Lebanon for around eight years and New London Nutrition opened about two years ago. While Athletic Edge will be their first gym, fitness classes are regularly held at Nutrition on the Green.

“We’ve been seeing for years and hearing that there’s really no fitness center from Lebanon into Plymouth (N.H.) into New London and the ones that are aren’t really accommodating,” Kirby Bonnell said during a recent Enfield Planning Board meeting, where the couple received approval to operate the gym.

The gym will use a key fob system, which will allow people who are members to access it at any time of day. There will be two treadmills, an elliptical to start and strength training equipment for all fitness levels, Sean Bonnell said. The couple is currently figuring out how much to charge for memberships. A wall will separate the gym from the shake shop.

The two businesses take up 1,800 square feet and the gym will take up around 1,000 square feet. Energizing Edge will have seating for eight people and be open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

“We think that the shake and tea part will be a lot of grab and go first thing in the morning,” Kirby Bonnell said. The business has an app where people can place orders and pay ahead of time.

The new businesses join a string of others that have opened — or are under construction — on Route 4 in Enfield in the last year.

Randy’s Car Wash opened last December near the Canaan town line. Drew Hitchcock is using the old Enfield Roller Rink for a woodworking business and Bruce Bergeron, owner of the convenience and deli store chain Jake’s, bought Brownies Auto Parts and knocked down the building. The property, which is close to Jake’s Enfield location, will be a car wash and self-storage facility. Mickey’s was recently renamed to 18 Hands, a steak and seafood restaurant.

“We’re excited to have new businesses here,” said Rob Taylor, Enfield’s land use and community development administrator. He referred to the recent activity on Route 4 as “the post-COVID bounce.”
