BURLINGTON — Rivendell Academy freshman Sydney Schoenbeck finished fourth, Hartford junior Jordan Davis finished fifth and the Thetford Academy girls were second in the team competition, finishing only behind Essex, the Division I state champion in track and field, to highlight Upper Valley participation ast last week’s Vermont high school decathlon meet earlier this week.

Davis scored 5,071 points in the two-day competition, which was held Monday and Tuesday at Burlington High’s Holland L. Smith track. He finished first in the javelin (146 feet), second in the discus and third in the shot put. He also had personal bests in the 100-meter dash (12.55 seconds), long jump (19 feet, 1.5 inches), 400 meter-run (58.8 seconds) and 1,500 (5:29.73). Davis finished 10th last year.

Schoenbeck, who trains with Hartford, “was a huge surprise to all in attendance, except for me,” Hartford coach Mike Perry said. She won state titles in the 200 meters and the long jump, and in the decathlon, she finished fourth in the javelin and the long jump and second in the high jump.

Perry said Schoenbeck has set Rivendell records in the 100, 200 and 400 meters as well as the shot put, javelin and long jump.

“Finishing fourth in the decathlon behind three girls from Essex, she has left a huge mark that, as a ninth grader, she was one to look out for in the future,” Perry said.

Amara Calhum-Flowers of White River Valley, this year’s Division III girls state champions, finished fifth (4,470 points), followed by Thetford’s Charlize Brown (sixth, 4,418 points) and Madelyn Durkee of Thetford (eighth, 4,111 points). White River Valley’s Cassandra Armstrong was 11th with 3,868 points. Callum-Flowers was sixth in the javelin and fifth in the 400 meters.

Charlotte Reimanis of Thetford (47th, 2,423) was third in the discus. Armstrong was second in the 400 and fourth in the 100. Brown took third in the 400 and Thetford’s Jada Rich placed third in the shot put and 16th overall with 3,567 points.
