Town Meeting preview: Sharon to decide whether to move to ballot voting

Articles of note: One article asks whether voters will approve eliminating the office of constable. Others ask whether voters approve moving to Australian ballot voting for town officers, budget articles and all public questions. A school article asks whether voters support increasing the number of School Board members from three to five.

Contested races: There are no contested races on the municipal side. School officers will be elected from the floor.

Budgets and spending articles: The proposed town budget is $2.02 million, of which $1.48 million is to be raised by property taxes. Last year’s municipal budget was $1.9 million. The proposed school budget is $6.75 million, which is expected to result in education spending of $13,514 per equalized pupil. The school budget is up from $5.88 million last year.

When, where and how to vote:The School District’s annual meeting is scheduled to take place on Monday, March 4 at 6 p.m. at the Sharon Elementary School, 135 School Street. Australian ballot voting for officers will be Tuesday, March 5 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the elementary school. The in-person meeting will begin at 9 a.m. that day at the school.
